When Cooling Trouble Is Urgent
Schedule prompt service when the outdoor unit will not run, the indoor temperature keeps climbing, the breaker trips, wiring smells hot, the coil or suction line freezes, or water threatens ceilings and flooring. Shut the system off for smoke, sparking, burning odor, repeated breaker trips, or heavy ice. Do not keep resetting a breaker or add refrigerant before locating the reason charge was lost.

A complete diagnosis may include return and supply temperatures, indoor wet-bulb conditions, total external static pressure, airflow, capacitor values, voltage, amperage, contactor condition, drain operation, refrigerant pressures, superheat, and subcooling. Those measurements must be compared with the equipment type, outdoor conditions, metering device, and manufacturer targets. Pressure alone does not prove the charge is correct.

What should I check when the AC blows warm air?
Confirm the thermostat is set to Cool, the setpoint is below room temperature, the filter is not blocked, the indoor and outdoor disconnects are on, and the breaker is not tripped. If the breaker trips again, the outdoor fan does not run, or ice appears, shut the system off and schedule diagnosis.
Should I run the AC when the coil is frozen?
No. Turn cooling off and allow the indoor blower to run only if it operates normally and there is no electrical or water hazard. Ice can be caused by low airflow, a dirty coil or filter, blower trouble, restrictions, low refrigerant, metering problems, or operating conditions. The cause should be confirmed after the ice melts.
How often should cooling maintenance be scheduled?
